Apply for the Program
The application for the AY 24-25 cohort is now closed. Look for the next application to open Summer 2025.
In order to be sustainable and ongoing, this program utilizes a train-the-trainer model.
Members of the U of M community have been trained on how to facilitate the program and are our primary facilitators for RJTP cohorts.
Schedule
There are eight, two-hour training sessions in total. These eight training sessions typically occur once a month on Thursday or Friday mornings.
Each training session is an important component of RJTP and provides a foundation for subsequent learning. We want and expect people to fully participate in each session yet also recognize life happens and allow up to one missed session to recognize personal circumstances.
AY 2024-2025 Training Dates
These training sessions will be held on the mornings of:
Session 1: Thursday, September 19, 9:30-11:30 AM
Session 2: Thursday, October 24, 9:30-11:30 AM
Session 3: Thursday, November 21, 9:30-11:30 AM

Modality
Modality is determined each semester based on facilitator/cohort needs. RJTP applicants should typically expect RJTP cohorts to be either virtual via Zoom or hybrid (a combination of some Zoom sessions and some in person sessions).
For the AY 2024-2025 cohort, the modality for training sessions will be virtual with the expectation that accountability groups will have some meetings in person (if possible) to complete homework together between sessions.
Application
UMTC advisor and advisor-like staff are encouraged to apply. Applicants who primarily advise undergraduate students will be prioritized. There is space for 15-20 participants.
The application takes approximately one hour to complete. The form consists of responding to short essay questions as well as sharing social identities. There is no ideal or required length for your answers so the focus can be on quality (vs. quantity).
The goal of these prompts is to give the program’s facilitators more information about you and your experience with racial and social justice work. This will assist in assembling the program cohort along with ensuring diverse representation. Information submitted will be treated with the utmost care and confidentiality.
Application Short Essay Prompts
What is your personal definition of racial justice?
Describe your understanding of racialized dynamics in your work/personal life, here at the University, and/or in the broader society today. What are the issues you bump into when it comes to issues of race and racism?
As a human being, we all hold biases which affect how we think, behave, and show up in spaces. How do you develop self-awareness about racial bias and prejudice within your work with students?
Write about the areas you need some work on. What knowledge and skills do you hope to gain during the program?
Interested in the program but maybe not feeling quite ready yet?
In order to engage meaningfully, applicants should have some familiarity with racial justice tenets and a willingness to participate with head, heart, and hand. If you have no prior knowledge of racial justice tenets but you have interest, check out the advisor Toolkit to generate ideas for your personal development and preparation for RJTP in the future.
